Jerzy Grotowski
Jerzy Grotowski (11 August 1933 - 14 January 1999) was a Polish theatre director and innovator of experimental theatre, the "theatre laboratory" and "poor theatre" concepts. Grotowski was born in Rzeszów, Poland on 11 August 1933 and died in Pontedera, Italy on 14 January 1999, aged 65.
Grotowski's innovative style is a nod to, or rather a combination of numerous sources, most important to his purpose was; Dullins rhythm exercises, Delsarte's investigations of extroversive and introversive reactions, Stanislavski's work on "physical actions" Meyerholds Bio-mechanical training, Vakhtanghovs synthesis. Equally stimulation to his style is the training technique of oriental theatre.
"We do not want to teach our actor a predetermined set of skills or give him a "bag of tricks." Ours is not a deductive method of collecting skills. Here everything is concentrated on the "ripening" of the actor which is expressed by a tension towards the extreme, by a complete stripping down, by the laying bare of ones own intimity - all this without the least trace of egotism
"We are seeking to define what is distinctly theatre, what separates this activity from other categories of performance and spectacle... Our productions are detailed investigations of the actor-audience relationship. That is, we consider the personal and scenic technique of the actor to be the core of theatre art."
"we consider the personal and scenic technique of the actor as the core of theatre art"

"It seems to me," Brook said, "that Grotowski is showing us something which existed in the past but has been forgotten over the centuries; that is that one of the vehicles which allows man to have access to another level of perception is to be found in the art of performance."
